The South African Navy Bandís first international
tour as a whole group was to Germany from 20 January to
4 February 2002. The primary reason for our visit was
to participate in the 38th International Music Show of
the Nations, Bremen. The show comprised seven performances
over four days with an estimated crowd attendance of almost
35,000 people. This was the first time in the history of
the Band that we participated in the same arena with
eleven other military bands from Europe, the United
Kingdom and the United States of America.
On completion of the performances in Bremen, we
travelled to Neu-Brandenburg for one Tattoo performance.
We then made our way to Hamburg for our first overseas
concert performance. Here we performed for the
shipbuilders who were building the South African Navyís
new ships at the time, South African Navy members living
in Germany, and their families.
Our final concert performance on tour was in BŁnde
where we held a combined concert with members of the
local Shanty Choir. (The Shanty choir is affiliated to
the German Naval and Marine Association.)
