The participation of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in the 9th DSTV Mitchell's Plain Festival provides a great opportunity for the various SANDF members to interact directly with the general public as well as international visitors. The festival  presents an opportune time to educate the public about the role of the SANDF and to create awareness of the force's capabilities. Youngsters from local schools are made aware of the different career paths available in the SANDF and the Department of Defence.  It is hoped that the military displays will help to broaden their vision, promote personal growth, and instil a desire to pursue a career in the SANDF.
