Media briefing and departure for OPERATION KETANE deployment

A media briefing was held on board SAS AMATOLA on Friday 13 January 2017. The purpose of the media briefing was to inform and to highlight the significance of Operation KETANE (Chain) deployment which is the 100th year commemoration of the sinking of the SS Mendi. The operation is called KETANE (Chain) to represent the inter-operability of the various activities that will be taking place during the deployment. On route the ship is set to conduct operational sea training, operations, exercises and diplomatic activities with other navies.

The Officer Commanding SAS AMATOLA Captain J.F. Roux took the opportunity to explain to the media what type of planning went into making a deployment of such magnitude possible. He further explained how the shipís company is looking forward to the deployment and what impact the training and exercises will have on the members. The Captain guaranteed the public that the vessel has some of the finest sailors on board and the country should be proud.
The ship sailed on the 16th January 2017 to conduct Operation Corona from Simonís Town until crossing the Namibian border at the Orange River. Thereafter the ship will head to Rota, Spain while preparing for the British Operational Sea Training on route.
The SAS AMATOLA crew is proud to participate in this historic deployment and see this as an opportunity to take part in a nation building effort apart from defending the sovereignty of the republic. The crew is ready to represent the Republic of South Africa on this historic occasion.
