Islamic Republic of Iran Naval Warships visit Durban

Two Islamic Republic of Iran (IRIS) warships arrived in Durban for their visit to Africa.

The two vessels, I.R.I.S. ALAVAND commanded by Commander Mohammad Reza Ebrahimi and the I.R.I.S BOUSHEHR commanded by Lieutenant Commander, Farhad Fatahi arrived on 15 November 2016.

The two vessels are under the command of 44 Task Group Naval Command, Commodore Seyed Omid Golestaneh.

“The ships’ arrival demonstrates the Islamic Republic of Iran’s commitment to its new ties with South Africa and to maritime security in the African Continent,” said 44 Task Group Commander Golestaneh.

Captain E. Nyathi and other SA naval officers were invited on board I.R.I.S ALAVAND. The two vessels are based in Iran and this was their first visit to Africa. During their voyage, the ships stopped over in Tanzania.

Early this year, I.R.I.S. ALAVAND met with the SAN Frigate, SAS SPIOENKOP at the International Fleet Review hosted by India in February 2016.

Squadron Commander, Captain E.M. Nyathi took Commodore Seyed Omid Golestaneh and his delegates on a tour of SAS GALESHEWE.

Acting Officer Commanding Naval Base Durban, Commander D. Jones took the Commodor and his delegates on the tour of the unit.

At a function on 1 December 2016 at the Dockyard Arms, Acting Officer Commanding Naval Base Durban, Commander D. Jones welcomed the 44 Task Group Commander and his naval officers.
